Düsseldorf

Check out the current weather with this Düsseldorf webcam. It is about 2 blocks from zum Uerige.

Check out some hotels with this Düsseldorf Hotel Guide.

zum Uerige has website, now in English as well as German.

The primary hotels again this year is the Haus Rheinblick (a "Mom and Pop" place in the Altstadt. The backup is the Hotel CVJM near the train station. Neither have web sites, so email me if you want more information.

There are four traditional brewpubs left in Düsseldorf, three in the old part of town (Altstadt) and one a little ways away. All beer rankings are Michael Jacksons’s.

Zum Uerige, Bergerstraße 1 My personal favorite place (maybe in the world) to drink beer. Many rooms, each with its own clientele. Limited food, but great beer. Their beer is the most assertive, hoppiest, (at around 50 IBU's --the same as Sierra Nevada) and most complex of the alts.(****) They also do a wheat beer ( ** ) that is what we would call an “American Wheat.”

Zum Schlüssel, Bolkerstraße 43 This has the best food of the four brewpubs, but is in my mind is fourth in the beer (though the beer is very good).** ½

Im Füchschen, Ratingerstraße 28 Not as hoppy as zum Uerige but pretty damn good. Extensive schnapps and spirits menu. Great food, too*** ½

Schumacher, Oststraße 123 A little outside the Altstadt (a 15 minute walk or one subway stop). Their beer is lightest in body as well as the maltiest (supposedly they are the only one to still do a decoction mash) with some fruitiness in the finish. *** ( I do recommend their website)

Im Goldenen Kessel, Bolkerstraße 44 A tap room for Schumacher. The beer here is also served from wood kegs just like at the brewery and the other brewpubs.

Also in the Altstadt are:

Brauerei zur Uel, Ratingerstraße 16 Just down the street from Im Füchschen, this is brewery that is no more. They now serveFüchsche Alt, so you might as well walk up the street a bit. Good breakfasts, though!

Brauerei im Goldenen Ring, Burgplatz 21 There is no longer a brewery here. Now they serve Schlösser Alt (* ½) (not be confused with Schlüssel above) "from the wood." Seems to have an older crowd, but the food is good (maybe the two are related).

Auberge. Loud music , crowded and smokey, but a character all its own. Serves Frankenheim Alt from wooden kegs.

Pilsener Urquell, Grabenstraße 6 Guess what beer they have here? In addition to Pilsener Urquell (****). they have a dark Czech beer called U Flecku. They also now have Budweiser Budvar on tap as well. Czech food.

Outside of the Altstadt.

Frankenheim Brauereiausschank, Wielandstraße 14 A little bit out of the Altstadt. Frankenheim (**) is my favorite of the "nonbrewpub" altbiers. (MJ calls it light, dry and yeasty). They also have (if I remember correctly) vegetarian meals.

Brauhaus Joh. Albrecht, Niederkasselerstraße 102 This is across the Rhine in the area of Niederkasseler. It is one of a chain of brewpubs more in the American style. They have a light and a dark lager. Not bad, good for a change of pace and to see some of the rest of the town.

Paulaner Bottschaft, Hüttenstraße 30 Yes, this is the Paulaner from Munich. They have the full range of Paulaner beers and good Bavarian food. (Sausage to die for!)

Main Train Station. In the “market area” of the train station is a wine bar that also serves Budweiser Budvar(*** ½ ).
