Sticke Warriors European Tour 2020

Join us for an amazing beer tour accross Europe

What is Sticke?

One of my favorite places to drink beer is a brewpub called zum Uerige in Düsseldorf, Germany. They basically only serve one beer -- an Alt beer. This style is only brewed in the area around Düsseldorf. There are three other brewpubs that still brew and serve it in the traditional manor -- dispensed from wooden casks via gravity feed. The only way to get it the way it was meant to be served it to go to Düsseldorf, which I have done many times! .

Now it turns out that a couple of times a year they brew a special batch (called, among other things) Sticke -- which is local Rhineland slang for "secret." They don't advertise or promote it -- on the day before they hang a sign (in slang) that says "Tomorrow Sticke." I had never tasted this beer, so I asked the brewery when it was next going to be served, and it turns out the dates are not such a secret -- the third Tuesday in January and October. So I decided to go (this was October 1998). An it turns out that three friends that are also homebrewers decided to come along. So was born Sticke 98

That makes this year the 23rd Annual Sticke Tour

Where do we go?

Antwerp, Düsseldorf and Bamberg are always on the schedule. We try to add another interesting (beer wise) city to the schedule.

Odd numbered years we go west to east and in even numbered years the reverse. And in leap years we go in December instead of October. So this year we start in Bamberg, then Düsseldorf and Antwerp. Our "postscript" city this year is Amsterdam, which becomes more interesting (beer wise) every year.

How does this work?

The word "tour" is a little misleading. This is not a "package tour" like those you buy at a travel agent. It is a bunch of people traveling together to taste the widest variety of good beer possible. Many, but not all are homebrewers..

Everybody is responsible for your own airline tickets. In the past I have made hotel reservations for those who were traveling with the main "group." However, lots of folks came and went on their own and met up with us along they way.

Some people came for as short as a week, while others traveled around Europe for a month, crossing our paths for the last week or so.

If you are going to join us in Bamberg, you can actually arrive any day.

So if you have a European business trip in the late Fall, go over a week or so early (or stay a week or so later) and come drink beer with us. Visit relatives, museums, cathedrals, whatever -- then come drink beer with us!
